Sigur Rós: Valtari

The Cambridge headquarters of PaisleyTunes has a guest for the next day or so who is in possession of a six-month old baby girl. What kind of music would a baby girl want to hear?

While Stabbarific would certainly choo-choo-choo-choo-choose mid-’90s Raffi, I am going to lean toward something a little more avant garde.

I’m guessing Sigur Rós‘ upcoming (May 21st) album Valtari will make the baby super happy.

While Sigur Rós generally makes pleasant ambience, their most rescent (future) album is supposedly more electronic, according to bassist Georg Hólm. As an aside, I love that Hólm is always the one being quoted in the press because he is the only one that speaks English well enough to interview. An intimate and telling quote from Hólm regarding the creation of Valtari reveales just how proud of this album he is:

I really can’t remember why we started this record, I no longer know what we were trying to do back then. I do know session after session went “pear-shaped”, we lost focus and almost gave up… did give up for a while. But then something happened and form started to emerge, and now I can honestly say that it’s the only Sigur Rós record I have listened to for pleasure in my own house after we’ve finished it.

I’ll let you know what the baby thinks. In the meantime… buy something, won’t you?

  1. I’ll go sing Baby Beluga to the kid. We’ll see which she likes better.

  2. Wow, baby development has been added to your house amenities! That’s going to the most musically cultured newborn in the world!
